Cion Prime: Crusade Battle 3

Having received reports of a valuable artifact in the ruins, Strike Force Arastos heads off to retrieve it, only to find a Chaos warband has the same idea! Chapter Master Arastos orders an immediate frontal assault on the traitors.

Crusade - Incursion - The Relic

I am trying to play the other 5 missions before I play the relic mission, just to minimize the number of relics in my force, since they are supposed to be rare. But when we rolled for the mission, we rolled three two's in a row. It must be the will of the Emperor.

This was my third game, and my Crusade Points were at 57. My opponents Crusade points were 54, so he received a bonus CP to start the game with.

Pre-game

Chaos won the roll and chose to be the Attacker. The Relic was placed in the center of the board. As the Defender, Strike Force Arastos got to choose Deployment Zone, and deploy the first unit.

Agendas

Strike Force Arastos: Reaper, Secure the Area
Reprisal Force Sulla: Lord of the Warp, Survivor (Consul Sulla)

Reprisal Force Sulla won the roll off, and chose to go second, hoping the Imperial Fists would leave their heavy cover.

Deployment

The Relic

Squad Thanatos hiding.

The rest of Force Arastos crammed into one ruin.

Nikephoros also hiding from the anti-tank weaponry.

Biker Squad Delos protecting Lord Consul Sulla and Madman Ansyan.

Lord Consul Sulla surrounded by his minions.

Dark Apostle Eliphas recites litanies to inspire the marines and Havocs to ever greater acts of destruction.

Turn 1 - Strike Force Arastos

Strike Force Arastos strides forward to deliver justice to the traitors.

No strats were used. In shooting, Squad Isokrates wiped out one of the CSM squads, earning a Reaper tally and Squad Hektor wiped a second CSM squad to also earn a Reaper tally.

Turn 1 - Reprisal Force Sulla

Biker Squad Delos got buffed by Prescience, fired their bolters and then charged into Squad Thanatos, and managed to inflict three whole wounds. They then lost 4 bikes to thunderhammer wounds and the Aspiring Champion decided he'd had enough, and failed his Morale test.

The havoc squad that could see Nikephoros launched a salvo at him, but thanks to Armour of Contempt, they only inflicted 5 wounds.

Turn 2 - Force Arastos

Strike Force Arastos continues their advance toward the Relic.

Turn 2 - Force Sulla

Before Movement: Consul Sulla, Madman Ansyan and a CSM squad move toward the relic in the shadow of a ruin.

After Movement: A CSM squad ready to grab the Relic, and in the ruin Madman Ansyan unloads a Smite...

...dealing 3 MW. Smite is quickly becoming the bane of Arastos's existence.

Shooting sees a Havoc squad with Chain cannons emerge from Strategic Reserve, and target Squad Hektor (pictured above). Transhuman Physiology is popped in response, and only 2 brothers fall from Hektor. The Havocs then pop Endless Cacophony and rather than deal with Transhuman, they target Nikephoros, wreck him, and pop Sabotaged Armour to make sure he explodes, which he does.

Turn 3 - Force Arastos

Squad Isokrates spends the turn claiming the Relic, Squad Hektor uses Fury of the First to remove the chaingun weilding Havocs, and Squad Drakon removes the CSM squad near the objective. Also, Squad Thanatos assaults and kills Madman Ansyan. All three squads earn a Reaper tally.

Turn 3 - Force Sulla

The Havocs in the distance kill one brother from Squad Hektor, and wound another.

Discretion is the better part of valour, as Consul Sulla, Eliphas the Twiceborn and the last Havoc squad attempt to survive the onslaught.

Turn 4 - Force Arastos

Squad Hektor is carrying the Relic, so earn 10 VP.

Having taken out Madman Ansyan, Squad Thanatos is tasked with hunting Consul Sulla.

Squads Isokrates and Drakon form screens to protect the Relic. Squad Drakon takes down the Havocs for another Reaper tally.

Turn 5

Squad Hektor was still carrying the Relic, so they earned another 10 VP.

On his turn 4, Consul Sulla charged Squad Thanatos, but failed to inflict any damage. On turn 5, he was in turn charged by Chapter Master Arastos, who made short work of him, with his thunder hammer. Dark Apostle Eliphas surveyed the carnage before him, and silently withdrew to the shadows.

Squad Hektor was still carrying the Relic at the end of the game, so they earned 60 VP.

Score

Strike Force Arastos: 80
Reprisal Force Sulla: 0

After game

Reprisal Force Sulla

One of the CSM squads failed an Out of Action test, but with no previous experience, there was no downside.

Madman Ansyan earned 2 XP for Lord of the Warp.

I think the chaingun Havocs were marked for greatness? I forgot to write it down.

Strike Force Arastos

Squad Hektor was marked for greatness, for recovering the Relic.

Squad Isokrates earned 2 XP for Reaper.

Summary

Three games in, and I am loving Crusade. Reaper agenda is quickly becoming my go to, and winning and losing is a distant secondary consideration to gaining XP. The RPG feel to it is pretty fun, and the games play pretty quick, even with me and my poor photography skills wasting time taking pictures. It's a lot of fun, and I recommend it.

Until next time, happy gaming!
